Staff Members:
We now have two new part-time Program
Administrators - Laurie Monteleone and Shannon Brennan.
(Note: Effective December 20, 2001, Shannon Brennan is no longer
working for our organization. She can be reached through Nature's Baby,
which will be online soon.)
Laurie’s interest in alternative health
care began over ten years ago while she was struggling to overcome her own
health challenges. In 1999 Laurie received her certification as a
classical homeopath from the CHC (Council for Homeopathic Certification).
Laurie also works in part time private practice in Thousand Oaks,
California. Laurie’s quote about alternative health care – “Never
underestimate the power of your bodywisdom - your innate ability to heal.
It has all the answers you need to recover your health and will
tell you, if you listen carefully enough, what decisions to make.
Just listen.”
Shannon is currently working on her M.S. in
Traditional Chinese Medicine, which includes extensive study of Chinese
herbs and acupuncture. She
has seven years of experience in aromatherapy and has created her own line
of aromatherapy products called Nature’s Baby, which specializes in
products for mother and baby (and Dad’s too).
Laurie is here
to help answer your questions, so don’t hesitate to give us a call.
Phones and emails are also answered by Carleen Potter and Melinda Wiman or
one of our volunteers.

Mexican
Hospitals - Some of the World’s Best for Alternative Cancer Care
Most people do not tend to think of
Mexico as a haven for cancer treatment, but there are approximately 40 clinics
and hospitals there offering some of the finest alternative medical treatments
for cancer today. They vary in size from one-doctor operations to modern,
multi-story, full-service hospitals with an extensive range of doctors on
staff. Most are located close to the Mexican/American border across from San
Diego, California. Some are even within walking distance of the border
which avoids the need to wait in line in your car for half an hour at the border
to clear customs. Although a passport or visa is not necessary, valid
identification identifying your country of birth, such as driver's license, is
required.
Why do patients go to these
clinics and hospitals?
In Mexico, the political system is such that the government
credits and inspects clinics and hospitals, but does not attempt to get in
between the doctor and patient. In short, it leaves doctoring to doctors. This
means they are free to use treatments from countries around the
world which have proven successful in battling cancer.
They can also develop and perfect their own treatments and immediately use therapeutic
breakthroughs as soon as they become available.
Not so in the United States where cancer
treatments are usually limited to varieties of chemotherapy, radiation and
surgery. This is unfortunate as there are about 100 other useful, non-toxic
cancer treatments, almost all of which have well-documented scientific evidence
to support them.
Having freedom-of-choice regarding treatments,
Mexican doctors have been able to develop their skills in using both
conventional and alternative therapies, schooling their staffs in them and
setting up appropriate patient care facilities. In addition, over the years
they've learned which treatments, or combination of treatments, work best for
which conditions.
An unusual "sub-specialty" in cancer care has arisen
in Mexico out of all this. Although hospitals there get patients from
around the world, the majority come from the United States (This is another
reason they locate close to the border.) These people typically have received
conventional cancer treatments where they live without success. Frequently
they are very sick with bodies severely weakened by surgery, radiation or
chemotherapy. As a result, Mexican clinics and hospitals have become accustomed
to helping patients with extra burdens. Not only must they treat end-stage
cancer for people coming to them as a last resort, which is a task far more
difficult than in the earlier stages, but they must also undo the damage done by
conventional "therapies."
Best of the Best
Not all clinics and doctors in Mexico are
worthwhile of course. We recommend only the best of the best. That is,
those we feel are the most experienced, reputable and reliable - large or small.
We have toured many facilities, talked to the staff, are familiar with
their operations and talked to patients. Typically, they've been around for
many years. One in particular has treated over 100,000 cancer patients with
alternative treatments in the last 35 years. A record like that speaks for
itself. (Call us to arrange a free consultation with a doctor from Oasis of Hope
or call them directly at 888-500-4673.) For more information and recommendations, phone
800-282-2873, or 805-498-0185 M-F, 9-5, Pacific time.
What to expect
Going to a hospital in Mexico, however, is
different than a trip to an American hospital. Although most hospital staff
there speak English fluently, there are definite cultural differences to
get used to. Upon crossing the border, one quickly becomes aware that Mexico is
not a rich country. Many streets and buildings are in need of repair, and
sometimes clinics or hospitals are found in run-down or industrial areas. This
is normal for Mexico and is no reflection on the quality of care one can expect
once inside where things are clean, modern and well cared for.
Many of the hospitals provide an extra bed so a
family member or friend can stay in the same room with the patient at little or
no cost. And most hospitals have such amenities as in-room phone service,
internet access, cable TV and so on. Cancer therapeutic diets are designed for
each patient.
Typical Length of Stay
Hospitals will provide lists of things to bring
for the stay, which usually lasts 3 - 4 weeks. This time-frame allows them to
monitor the cancer cell's reproductive cycle which runs approximately 21 days.
Doctors need this time to closely monitor the progress of therapy.
Insurance Coverage
Some insurance companies will cover some services
offered in foreign hospitals. Blue Cross and Blue Shield sometimes cover certain
treatments depending on the state of residence of the patient in the USA (no
uniform policy here nationwide). Medicare and Medicaid do not cover anything in
any out-of-country hospitals. It is very important that insurance paperwork is
filled out and submitted exactly correct. Service companies have arisen
specializing in filling out and processing insurance paperwork for foreign
hospitals and negotiating with insurance companies on behalf of patients. They
collect a percentage of the money recovered. Due to bad financial experiences
with certain patients over the years, most hospitals now require substantial
up-front cash payments. Insurance billing takes place after the fact and remains
the responsibility of the patient.
